ENI and NPI numbers are two numbers that your business needs. Employer Identification Number is the first one to apply for. This number is issued by the IRS and it will be used to file taxes, open a bank account or apply for insurance. The EIN number acts like your personal Social Security number. However, if you are a sole proprietor, you legally can use your personal Social Security Number. But, I would not recommend that as that number will need to be given out to your clients for such forms as a payment statements or superbills. An EIN is easy to obtain just go online to IRS.gov.
The next number you need to obtain is the NPI or National Provider Identifier. This 10-digit number identifies you as a healthcare provider. You may be thinking I do not need this number as I am not taking insurance. Well, if you plan on providing receipts to your clients in the form of a superbills or for payment histories for their Health Saving Account (HSA), Family Savings Account (FSA), or for reimbursement through a PPO insurance company you will need an NPI number too. This number is also easy to obtain, and I have created a special link for you. That link is http://bit.ly/2M84KRC. These numbers can be applied for before you even have your first client.

Can you use your business EIN but personal NPI for billing? I have an LLC, which is not brick and mortar, but I also have an NPI for the LLC. I’m under the impression that the business NPI would only be used if I had employees, which I don’t. I’m operating individually right now. Please advise. Thanks!
You would have an individual NPI for your you and an EIN for the business. Both are public record. I hope that helps
Thank you for this information. Currently I am operating under a DBA. Is this sufficient or would it be better to obtain a PLLC or LLC?
I would talk to a lawyer, but I am leaning towards a PLLC if your state allows such.
