Therapist Practice in a Box Tip #30 Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs keep us small, and they create fear and doubt in our mind. There are two types of limiting beliefs ones that are true and those that are not. True limiting beliefs are our physical limitation, for example, most of us will be tall enough or skilled enough to play basketball for the NBA. This is true and no matter how much I try I can’t make the team. The more common type of limiting belief is the one we create in our heads. This belief tells us that we are not good enough, or smart enough or we are going to fail. We become doubtful and anxious when these little thoughts pop into our heads. These stories are not true but we act as if they are. We think we can’t do (fill in the blank) _________ because others will laugh at me if I tell them my dream. Limiting beliefs often start with “I can’t, or I must, or I don’t. The absolute type of words. The belief can also be about the world or others in our environment. Tony Robbins said, “Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or one that can literally save their lives.”

Limiting beliefs keep is small and steal our vision and creativity. To get rid of these unhelpful beliefs, we first must identify what the belief is. Secondly look for a mentor, coach, or colleague that you trust and determine together if these beliefs are true. Thirdly, ask yourself is the belief holding you back. We all have some type of limiting beliefs, and we will have to go back and reexamine these beliefs as we find them.
